The first Central Oklahoma Lavender Festival will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013, at The Country Cottage Lavender Farm in Shawnee, Oklahoma, located 40 minutes from Oklahoma City and 90 minutes from Tulsa near the Shawnee Twin Lakes area. The festival will be a sensory delight offering a wide range of experiences for participants. Festival activities will include lavender and gardening workshops from local experts, herbal cuisine, a children’s area as well as the opportunity to cut your own lavender in the Country Cottage Lavender fields. Garden related vendors, local artisans as well as The Cottage will be selling their specialty items.

Several gardening workshops will be offered throughout the festival. Debi Seaton, owner of Country Cottage Lavender Farm, will discuss lavender uses and ways to successfully grown lavender in Oklahoma. The Farm will also host one of their popular workshops on making your own lavender wand. Bill Farris with Prairie Win Nursery will share his expertise with modern day rosemary. Marilyn Stewart, known as “The Caterpillar Lady” from Wild Things Nursery, will host a workshop on creating a garden for butterflies with Oklahoma’s native flowers.

June is the peak of lavender season. The fields should be full of the beautiful aromatic lavender flowers. Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to cut their own lavender bouquets from the field. Due to the lavender field irrigation system, children 13 and above will only be allowed in the lavender fields.

The Festival is a “must do” event for lavender lovers, gardeners, cooks, and crafters. Country Cottage Lavender grows and propagates several varieties of lavender: Grosso, Provance, Hidcote, Munstead and the unique white lavender, Alba. Admission to the festival is free but there will be a cost for workshops. Participants can register and reserve their spot online at countrycottagelavender.com

Festival hours are Saturday, June 1, 9 am-5:30 pm. A Country Cottage Lavender Lunch can be purchased from 11:00 to 2 with other foods sold during festival hours. There will also be other lavender cuisine and finger foods for sale. Festival activities will occur outdoors. Dress casually to ensure your comfort. No pets, please. There is parking at the Lavender Farm and overflow parking with shuttle service will be offered from the parking lot on the corner of S. Fishmarket and 149th streets.

Country Cottage Lavender Farm is located south of 1-40 at 17206 Walker Rd, Shawnee, OK, west of Highway 102 and north of Highway 9. For more information and a complete schedule, visit www.countrycottagelavender.com
